Lady and the Tech is a feature blog at Domain that showcases our female developers. I've reposted the contents of my interview below.
What did your journey to Domain looked like?
I have always loved computers and studied Computer Science in the Philippines. I moved to Sydney shortly after I graduated university. My first two jobs were at digital agencies. At my second job, I met Lily Li and since then I have been following her around!
I joined Fairfax a little after she joined. Back then, Domain was a small team at Fairfax. I worked on the Casual Ads system that Domain is still using. After several years there, I reunited with Lily and a few other ex-Fairfax people here at Domain!
What is the best project you've ever worked on and why? (either at Domain or elsewhere)
I’ve really enjoyed being involved with Innovation Day projects here at Domain. Not only do they serve as breaks to the daily workload, it’s allowed me to meet people outside of my team and to learn new technologies.
The best “project” I have worked on is a game for my son. He received some dinosaur cards from a toy, but lost the part that was needed to play the actual game. Because he still wanted to play with the cards, I used them to make a simple trivia game. It was at that moment that I thought, “Wow, it’s good to be a developer!”
What is your favourite piece/bit of tech right now?
What is your favourite slack channel?
I lurk at #gaming, but recently created #anime! It’s been fun discovering my fellow anime fans - if you love anime/manga, please join us at #anime!
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
I attended the #IAmRemarkable workshop led by Olena last month, and one piece of advice that resonated with me was to acknowledge achievements. Since then I have kept a notebook where I put in my wins for the day, no matter how big or small. It’s a good way to boost self-confidence and remember how far you’ve gotten.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I have “old person” hobbies: sewing and machine embroidery. I own a 4-needle embroidery machine that I got off Gumtree. My dream is to own a 12-needle someday - it costs as much as a car!Matt Botsford
